I’ll leave the beans.”

Behind him, a man in a business suit sighed loudly. “Come on, buddy. Some of us have somewhere to be.”

A young guy in a delivery uniform snickered and muttered something about “the smell.” A woman rolled her eyes and pulled out her phone, filming.

Wesley felt something rise in his chest. Something hot and heavy.

He had exactly seven dollars and forty cents left to his name. It was supposed to buy the kids two cans of ravioli for dinner and a pack of cheap crackers. He took his bread and his beans and shuffled out the door.

Wesley bought a single can of ravioli instead of two and walked back to the tent. That night, he split it three ways between the kids and told them he wasn’t hungry. Piper wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, “Daddy, your tummy’s growling.” He kissed the top of her head and told her to go to sleep.

The next morning, Wesley woke up to the sound of engines.

Two enormous black SUVs were parked in the gravel lot beside the tent. Three men in suits were standing outside. Wesley’s stomach dropped. He was sure it was the sheriff. He was sure they were going to take his kids.

He climbed out of the tent, his hands already up. “Please. We’re here because of yesterday morning.”

He held out a cream-colored envelope. Wesley’s name was written on it in careful, old-fashioned handwriting.

Wesley opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a single sheet of paper. As he read, the color drained from his face.

Dear Wesley,

My name is Harlan Whitcombe.
