The family of a high school math teacher who lost his life after a student prank ended in tragedy has spoken publicly about the heartbreaking incident for the first time.<\/p>\n

Jason Hughes, 40, of Gainesville, Georgia, died on March 5 after students carried out what was intended to be a harmless school tradition near his home. As part of an annual junior\/senior prank, five teenagers wrapped toilet paper around the trees in his yard.<\/p>\n

However, the situation took a tragic turn when Hughes went outside during the rainy weather. He slipped and fell, and at that moment an 18-year-old student, Jayden Ryan Wallace, who was driving a pickup truck, struck him. Hughes suffered serious injuries and later passed away.<\/p>\n

Police said Wallace stopped immediately after the accident, and the teenagers stayed to help Hughes while they waited for emergency responders. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.<\/p>\n

A prank that ended in tragedy<\/p>\n

Authorities said that during these prank-war traditions, students can lose points if the person they target catches them. Investigators believe this may have contributed to the group trying to leave the area quickly.<\/p>\n

Wallace was later arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespassing, and littering on private property. He is currently being held on a $1,950 bond. Four other students were also arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and littering.<\/p>\n

Hughes is survived by his wife and their two young sons. His wife, Laura, who is also a teacher, has expressed support for dropping the charges against the teenagers involved.<\/p>\n

She described the incident as a terrible accident and emphasized that Hughes had no conflict with the students. In fact, she said he enjoyed the school tradition and had even been looking forward to the prank.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a terrible tragedy, and our family wants to prevent another tragedy that could ruin the lives of these students,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cThat would go against Jason\u2019s lifelong commitment to caring for and guiding young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community support and fundraiser<\/p>\n

In another statement, Laura thanked the local community for its kindness and support during such a difficult time.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family is deeply grateful to the Hall County community for the prayers, support, and respect for our privacy as we grieve Jason\u2019s loss,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also asked people to keep the students and their families in their thoughts and prayers.<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Hughes\u2019 wife and their two sons. The page describes Jason as someone whose life touched many people and says his sudden passing will bring long-term challenges for his family.<\/p>\n

Remembering a dedicated teacher<\/p>\n

Just days before the incident, the Hall County School District had warned parents about prank activities during prom season, sometimes called Junior\/Senior Wars, after previous pranks had caused property damage.<\/p>\n

Will Schofield, superintendent of the Hall County School District, paid tribute to Hughes, describing him as a devoted educator and mentor.<\/p>\n

\u201cJason Hughes was a loving husband and father, as well as a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was deeply respected by students and colleagues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe gave so much to so many people while faithfully serving God. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife and family during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
