The Princess took \u201cthe blame\u201d for manipulating the photo.<\/p>\n
On her and William\u2019s official\u00a0X\u00a0<\/em>account, she wrote, \u201cLike many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother\u2019s Day. C.\u201d<\/p>\n Kensington Palace later confirmed it \u201cwould not be reissuing the original unedited photograph of Kate and her children.\u201d<\/p>\n The Associated Press, Reuters, Getty Images, and Agence France-Presse all decided to issue \u201ckill notices,\u201d which are advisory notices to remove or not use a specific photo.<\/p>\n They also released a statement, saying, \u201cThe Associated Press initially published the photo, which was issued by Kensington Palace. The AP later retracted the image because at closer inspection, it appears that the source had manipulated the image in a way that did not meet AP\u2019s photo standards. The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte\u2019s left hand.\u201d<\/p>\n According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the Palace would be under much pressure following\u00a0the issue with the photo.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s so major in all of this is that four international picture agencies have killed this image. That\u2019s really rare,\u201d Nicholl said.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t think of a a time since I\u2019ve been doing this job for the best part of 15 years where a royal image has been recalled. So that\u2019s highly unusual. It might force Kensington Palace\u2019s hand.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s\u00a0Media Show<\/em>, Phil Chetwynd, AFP\u2019s global news director, said that Kensington Palace is no longer a trusted source.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, absolutely not. Like with anything, when you\u2019re let down by a source the bar is raised \u2026 We sent out notes to all our teams at the moment to be absolutely super more vigilant about the content coming across our desk \u2014 even from what we would call trusted sources,\u201d he said, as reported by\u00a0Deadline.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cTo kill something on the basis of manipulation [is rare. We do it] once a year maybe, I hope less. The previous kills we\u2019ve had have been from the North Korean news agency or the Iranian news agency,\u201d Chetwynd added.<\/p>\n \u201cOne thing that\u2019s really important is you cannot be distorting reality for the public. There\u2019s a question of trust. And the big issue here is one of trust, and the lack of trust and the falling trust of the general public in institutions generally and in the media. And so it\u2019s extremely important that a photo does represent broadly the reality that it\u2019s seen in,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n The issue with the edited image only added fuel to the fire because both Kate and the Palace have already been accused of not providing information regarding her health and her whereabouts.<\/p>\n Arthur Edwards,\u00a0The Sun<\/em>\u2019s royal photographer\u00a0said the Princess of Wales has learned a \u201ctough and very public lesson\u201d breaking the \u201cgolden rule.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a golden rule that while you can crop a picture, you never, ever interfere with the image itself. Kate shouldn\u2019t have done it, and she was right to put her hand up and admit to her mistake so quickly,\u201d Edwards said, adding that social media have been overflowing with \u201cdisgusting bile and hateful comments about her.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNow the conspiracies are flying thick and fast \u2014 not that these people need any encouragement. These cheap shots at Kate will be upsetting for her.\u201d<\/p>\n According to some experts, among which Edwards, the Palace could have put a stop to the speculations had they released the unedited version of the photo.<\/p>\n \u201cBut of course this comes amid all the speculation as to what\u2019s happening with Kate, who, bar a brief picture yesterday and last week, none of us has seen since December. So many people \u2014 myself included \u2014 have been eager for an update on the Princess of Wales\u2019s health since she underwent abdominal surgery in January.\u201d<\/p>\n Edwards added, \u201cA bodged attempt at photographic manipulation may have been, but I still think it\u2019s a delightful image. Kate looks radiant and so proud on Mother\u2019s Day, surrounded by her loving kids. It\u2019s full of uplifting love and emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cIt appears that the source has manipulated the image,\u201d the Associated Press notification read.<\/h2>\n
