Being confined within your own body, unable to move or express yourself, while no one, not even you, realizes that you are still present, may seem like the most dreadful nightmare imaginable.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, such horrifying experiences are the reality for some individuals.<\/p>\n

Martin Pistorius, a 12-year-old from South Africa, was afflicted by an unknown neurological condition. It wasn\u2019t long before he lost his ability to move and communicate. He fell into a puzzling comatose state, or at least that\u2019s what everyone believed.<\/p>\n

It appeared as though he was entirely oblivious to his surroundings, but that was far from the truth. A few years after he became bedridden, he became conscious of his situation, yet he was powerless to act since he couldn\u2019t move or speak.<\/p>\n

Years later, doctors finally realized that he was indeed present, trapped within his own body.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy awareness returned gradually, so it wasn\u2019t as if I suddenly woke up from sleep,\u201d he recounted to All in the Mind. \u201cAs my awareness came back, it took me some time to fully grasp that I was confined within my body,\u201d Martin reflected after he eventually regained some aspects of his life, though never completely.<\/p>\n

We can hardly fathom the fear that Martin experienced during his ordeal.<\/p>\n

Currently, Martin can walk, but he has not regained his ability to speak. Instead, he communicates using a computer-assisted device.<\/p>\n

He is happily married and operates his own business from his home in Essex, UK.<\/h2>\n

Martin documented his life experiences in a book that became a bestseller, titled Ghost Boy: My Escape from a Life Locked Inside My Own Body, published by Simon & Schuster.<\/p>\n
