I always assumed this was just something neighborhood kids did from time to time, but had no idea that there were so many theories about the meaning behind this behavior.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32110\" src=\"https:\/\/homemaking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/shoes2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/973thedawg.com\/shoes-on-a-power-line-the-hidden-and-sometimes-sinister-meaning\/\">97.3 The Dawg via Unsplash\/Kontiantyn Li<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first theory takes us all the way back to wartime days when soldiers would apparently toss their boots when they had completed their training or completed their post. Maybe this symbolism is where all other theories originated from? Who knows. There\u2019s also a common belief that tossing shoes up on a power line is a way for gangs to mark their territory and warn others gangs to stay away. However, this theory has never exactly been proven.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture class=\"wp-image-36743\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/homemaking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-2.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homemaking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1482\" height=\"1088\" \/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=105853224\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many people believe that seeing shoes up on a power line is the result of kids bullying one another. I can think of at least two movies where neighborhood bullies have taken a kid\u2019s sneakers and thrown them up on a power line, leaving them shoeless. News<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps the most common theory out there (and the one that I personally believe in the most) is that people toss their sneakers up on to power lines \u201cjust because.\u201d Maybe it seems like a fun thing to do with a pair of old sneakers. And like so many other behaviors, people see the first pair flung up there and decide to follow suit.
