Kansas City Chiefs kicker\u00a0Harrison Butker\u00a0has\u00a0attracted a storm of controversy\u00a0for his recent\u00a0graduation speech\u00a0that attacked everything from abortion to women who work outside of the home.<\/p>\n
But he has one unlikely defender in\u00a0Whoopi Goldberg, who defended Butker on Thursday\u2019s episode of \u201cThe View.\u201d<\/p>\n
During Saturday\u2019s commencement at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, Butker attacked Joe Biden\u2019s support of abortion rights and suggested that a woman\u2019s life only begins when she becomes a wife and mother.<\/p>\n
Butker\u2019s comments aroused controversy on social media, and\u00a0a rebuke from the NFL, but\u00a0Goldberg defended his right to make those comments\u00a0to her fellow \u201cView\u201d co-hosts on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cListen, I like when people say what they need to say,\u201d Goldberg said. \u201cHe\u2019s at a Catholic college, he\u2019s a staunch Catholic. These are his beliefs, and he\u2019s welcome to them. I don\u2019t have to believe them. I don\u2019t have to accept them. The ladies who were sitting in that audience do not have to accept them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Goldberg saw similarities between Butker and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick who became a League pariah after he kneeled during the National Anthem.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe same way we want to represent when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee, we want to give respect to people whose ideas are different than ours,\u201d Goldberg said.<\/p>\n
Although Goldberg said Butker was entitled to his beliefs, she said that didn\u2019t necessarily mean they should be followed by others.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the women who are sitting there, if they take his advice, good for them, they\u2019ll be happy. If they don\u2019t, good for them, they\u2019ll be happy in a different way,\u201d Goldberg said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
