Despite his incredible resilience, Ryder now faces a different kind of challenge: the cruelty of others. Children and even adults sometimes react harshly to his appearance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we go to the park, there\u2019s a child who points and screams \u2018monster\u2019 at him before running away,\u201d his mother Brittany Wells told The Mirror.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut shopping the other day, someone shouted \u2018ew\u2019 at him. It\u2019s hard and it breaks my heart as a parent that after everything he\u2019s been through, people aren\u2019t always kind over something he can\u2019t help. But he is such a fighter, he doesn\u2019t let anything hold him back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryder\u2019s survival is nothing short of a miracle. Yet, as Brittany prepares for him to start school, her fear grows.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wears glasses and a cap and sometimes he\u2019ll hang his head to hide his face. But I just tell him every day that he\u2019s beautiful. Different is beautiful, and it\u2019s okay to be different. I reassure him as much as I can, but I\u2019m absolutely terrified about when he goes to school. There will always be a couple of kids who aren\u2019t kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brittany hopes Ryder\u2019s story will raise awareness about the effects of bullying on children with facial differences. She wants to teach others\u2014both children and adults\u2014that kindness matters, that appearances should never be a reason for cruelty, and that everyone deserves to live a happy, confident life.<\/p>\n
