The star we are discussing today once feared she wouldn\u2019t live past 21. At times, her early life story is almost beyond belief in its sorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, California, her upbringing was marked by chaos and pain. Her father abandoned the family when she was just three years old.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother, Leola, was an African-American entrepreneur from a Jehovah\u2019s Witness background. Personally, that was the most terrible feeling imaginable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When our star turned nine, her mother suffered a severe car accident that resulted in brain damage. In her struggle to regain fundamental skills, her mother occasionally unleashed her frustration and anger on her eldest child.<\/p>\n<p>The mother became irritable, abusive, and aggressive.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">She was diagnosed with schizophrenia.<\/h2>\n<p>By the time she entered high school, the future award-winning actress still hadn\u2019t mastered reading. This wasn\u2019t due to a lack of capability, but rather because no one had taken the time to teach her properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone kept telling me I was dumb \u2013 my stepdad, my mom, grandma, (\u2026) So, I started to believe I was dumb and that I couldn\u2019t read or do anything because I was dumb,\u201d she recounted.<\/p>\n<p>Then a teacher intervened, recognizing her potential beyond the labels and initiating private lessons. Gradually, she began to make progress, a small yet significant triumph in a challenging childhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty amazing to be nominated for a Grammy for reading aloud when I couldn\u2019t read at one point in my teenage years,\u201d she once remarked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told daily that I\u2019d never amount to anything,\u201d she remembered. \u201cNow, I look in the mirror and say, \u2018[Her name], I love and accept you.\u2019 It was all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, her mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and placed in an institution, leaving her children in foster care, separated from their siblings, and forced to face a world they were ill-equipped to handle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was essentially a 10-year-old mother,\u201d she stated frankly, explaining how she took care of her siblings and herself. Group homes were not much of an improvement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt more like a prison. My ability to make people laugh proved to be quite useful. I figured that if I could get these girls to laugh, they might not hurt me. But the bully girl said, \u2018Ahh b***h, we still going to beat your ass \u2026 but you funny.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laughter became her armor.<\/h2>\n<p>Her struggles didn\u2019t stop there. While in foster care, she faced molestation, and at the age of 17, she was raped by a police cadet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"618414a931e9cd97c0c9c493bb22fb8a\" data-index=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thankful he didn\u2019t kill me or anything, but that experience was incredibly traumatizing and it really affected me for a long time,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was comedy that became her saving grace. A social worker presented her with a choice: therapy or a comedy workshop. She opted for comedy.<\/p>\n<p>That decision led to a significant change in her life. Laughter turned into her protection, her expression, and ultimately her profession. I recall that night. She was homeless, hungry, frightened, and in pain. I promised her that if she maintained her faith in God and herself, we would reach a point where we would be housed, well-fed, less hurt, and free from fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The reason behind her nickname, a dirty unicorn<\/h2>\n<p>She encountered obstacles throughout her journey \u2014 challenging relationships, legal issues, and instances of public humiliation \u2014 yet she never wavered in her determination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I\u2019m a bit eccentric. \u2026 I constantly think of ways to get back at people without landing in jail,\u201d she once confessed regarding a peculiar act of revenge against a cheating partner.<\/p>\n<p>Her encounters with bullying also influenced her career path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m about to take all the nasty things those bullies said about me and turn it into profit,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n<p>The childhood moniker \u201cdirty unicorn\u201d became a significant part of her bestselling memoir, symbolizing how she transformed her pain into strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was often bullied in school,\u201d she shared. \u201cWhat I thought was a mole turned out to be a wart. I had a wart protruding from my forehead that resembled a horn, and kids would call me a dirty unicorn. It really hurt my feelings, and I did things to myself that I probably shouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her journey, she connected with legendary figures \u2014 from Oprah Winfrey, whose farm she aspired to work on, to Barbra Streisand and Taylor Swift \u2014 embracing mentorship, friendship, and collaboration.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Made history<\/h2>\n<p>She also made history as the first Black female stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live, a significant achievement that showcased her journey from being unknown to becoming a well-known figure.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, she became the second Black woman in history to win a Grammy for \u201cOutstanding Comedy Album,\u201d the first since Whoopi Goldberg took home the award in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, throughout her journey, she has remained committed to her purpose: to uplift those who have been told they\u2019re not enough.
