During the third day of their Australia trip, Harry and Meghan Markle attended a private charity event at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne, where Harry delivered a keynote speech focused on mental health. In his address, he spoke openly about his lifelong challenges, describing moments when he felt lost, powerless, and overwhelmed, while Meghan looked on.
He told the audience that although his life circumstances may be unique, the emotions he has faced—such as anxiety, stress, and helplessness—are widely shared. Reflecting on his grief after losing his mother in 1997, Harry explained that loss can be deeply disorienting, especially when experienced at a young age under intense public scrutiny. Ignoring grief, he said, does not make it disappear, and lacking a sense of purpose can make it even more damaging.
Harry admitted that for years he suppressed his emotions and lacked the tools to process them, often forcing himself to appear fine despite internal struggles. He noted that his time in the military helped him build resilience, teaching him to confront challenges rather than bury them.
In a conversation following his speech, Harry shared that after Diana’s death, he rejected the idea of his royal future, feeling disconnected from it and resistant for many years. Eventually, he began to reconsider, asking himself how he could use his position and resources to make a positive impact, and what his mother would have wanted for him—an outlook that ultimately shifted his perspective.
He also emphasized how becoming a husband and father helped ground him and gave him a clearer sense of purpose. Harry highlighted the importance of seeking support, stressing that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and that emotional well-being affects not just individuals but their families as well.
The summit brought together leaders and experts to discuss ways to create healthier, more supportive workplaces, with a strong focus on mental health. Throughout their visit to Australia, Harry and Meghan participated in several events centered on emotional well-being, including meetings with youth organizations and men’s health groups, where Harry spoke candidly about his own journey and the challenges of fatherhood.
He concluded by encouraging fathers to be open about their emotions and to remember they are not alone in navigating the ups and downs of parenting.
