If you see a man with one painted fingernail, here’s what it means

While traveling through Cambodia with a volunteer group, Elliot Costello had an encounter that would change the direction of his life.

What began as a simple interaction with a child during his trip soon became a deeply emotional experience—one that inspired him to dedicate himself to raising awareness about one of the most serious issues affecting children around the world: sexual abuse.

During his time there, Elliot met a young girl named Thea.

Like many children, she loved simple activities that allowed her to express herself. One of her favorite things to do was paint her nails.

Every day she would carefully apply nail polish, enjoying the colors and the small sense of creativity it gave her.

While the two were talking, Thea asked Elliot if she could paint one of his nails. At first, it seemed like a harmless and playful request.

Elliot agreed without hesitation, amused by the idea and happy to spend time chatting with her. As she carefully painted his nail, the moment felt lighthearted and innocent.

However, Elliot later learned something heartbreaking about Thea’s story. The young girl had been a victim of sexual assault.

The realization left him deeply shaken. The simple act of her painting his nail suddenly carried a much deeper meaning. In that quiet moment, Elliot made a promise to himself.

He decided that he would keep one of his nails painted as a permanent reminder of Thea and the suffering she had endured.

For Elliot, that small painted nail became a symbol—not only of one child’s story but of the millions of children around the world who suffer abuse in silence.

Motivated by this experience, Elliot began thinking about how he could turn that symbol into a message that others would notice.

He wanted something simple that could spark conversations and encourage people—especially men—to take responsibility in addressing the issue.

That idea eventually led him to create the #PolishedMan movement.

The campaign encourages men to paint one of their fingernails as a visible reminder that one in five children globally experiences sexual violence before the age of 18.

The painted nail is meant to do more than simply stand out visually. It serves as a conversation starter.

When people notice it and ask about it, supporters of the movement have an opportunity to talk about child abuse, raise awareness, and encourage others to take action.

Through the Polished Man initiative, supporters are also encouraged to raise funds for programs that help prevent abuse and support survivors.

These efforts include educational programs, counseling services, and resources that help protect vulnerable children and assist those who have already suffered trauma.

The organization believes that being a “Polished Man” means standing up against harmful behaviors and language—whether in everyday conversations, in communities, or on a global scale.

It encourages people to challenge attitudes that contribute to violence and to actively support safer environments for children.
