The body of a missing tourist was discovered in a landfill days after she was reported missing, and her son has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Authorities found the remains of Katty Oosterlinck on Friday, May 8, at the Zurita waste site in Puerto del Rosario on Spain’s island of Fuerteventura, according to multiple reports from Spanish and Dutch media outlets.
Oosterlinck, a 56-year-old Belgian tourist, had last been in contact with friends and family on May 4. After she disappeared, Spanish officials launched a search operation that lasted several days.
Investigators eventually located her remains at the Zurita environmental complex, an area that had already been under active search. Officials have not released information about the cause of death or the exact circumstances of her disappearance.
However, the Spanish Civil Guard’s Judicial Police unit in Las Palmas arrested the woman’s 22-year-old son on suspicion of murder, according to reports.
Her remains have since been removed from the site and transferred for examination. An autopsy is expected to be carried out by the Institute of Legal Medicine in Las Palmas.
Local authorities have not yet publicly commented in response to media requests.
