Tragic accident in Austria
Gaiser, who grew up in Brixen (Bressanone), South Tyrol, was cycling last Thursday when she was struck by a truck while crossing a busy intersection. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, she could not be saved. Authorities believe she died instantly.
Local outlets reported that the 47-year-old truck driver tested negative for alcohol. Clergy were seen comforting him at the scene. The exact dynamics of the collision remain under investigation.
In the days following, flowers and candles were placed at the roundabout where the accident occurred, as the community struggled to process the sudden loss.
A career full of promise
Julia was a beloved figure both in Italy and Austria, representing the Salzburg state team and earning three consecutive Salzburg titles in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Her club, EisTeam Salzburg, confirmed her passing in a heartfelt post on Instagram:
“With deep sorrow, we say goodbye to Julia Gaiser, who passed away on September 11, 2025, at the age of only 23. She was a three-time Salzburg champion and represented Austria with pride for Rot-Weiß Salzburg.”
The tribute praised not only her athletic achievements but also her kindness and dedication to younger skaters:
“Julia’s talent, determination, and radiant personality left an unforgettable impression both on and off the ice. She was a gifted teacher, bringing patience and joy to children’s classes. She was a ray of sunshine whose warmth reached far beyond the rink.”
Tributes from home and beyond
Julia’s hometown of Brixen also paid tribute. Mayor Andreas Jungmann expressed the town’s grief:
“We are deeply shaken. Julia was an extraordinary athlete and a role model to many. This is an immense loss for sports and for our community.”
Others remembered her determination and perseverance. Anneliese Schenk from the Italian Ice Sports Federation highlighted how Julia defied the odds:
“She began skating at eight—later than most—but through discipline and passion she rose to the top. Skating was her world, and she pursued it wholeheartedly.”
Another devastating loss
Just days after Julia’s passing, tragedy struck again when 15-year-old Matilda Ferrari, another rising skating star, was killed in a road accident in Trentino.
On Monday morning, Ferrari was hit by a truck while heading to school in the village of Giustino. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency responders and a rescue helicopter, she did not survive. Reports suggest she may have been hurrying to catch a bus, but the exact circumstances remain under review.
Remembering Matilda
Ferrari was described as ambitious, disciplined, and immensely talented. Mayor Manuel Cosi called her death a “moment of great sorrow,” adding: “Giustino has lost a star.”
Her club also honored her memory on social media:
“Matilda was an exceptional skater, full of passion and determination. Even after injuries, she never gave up. Last season, following a long recovery from a knee injury, she returned stronger than ever, earning third place in the Coppa Italia finals. She was an inspiration to all.”
They also recalled her contributions to Team Ice Secret, a synchronized skating group where she shared joy and unforgettable experiences with her teammates.
The tribute continued:
“She was sweet, sunny, and strong-willed—a role model for the younger generation, especially her little sister Greta, who always admired and supported her.”
A heartbreaking coincidence
The deaths of Julia Marie Gaiser and Matilda Ferrari within days of each other have left the figure skating world reeling. Both were bright talents, beloved mentors, and role models whose futures promised so much more.
Their loss is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be—on and off the ice.
