A lip reader claims Donald Trump made a five-word comment while riding in his car shortly after Xi Jinping wrapped up his three-day state visit to Washington.
Lip reader Nicola Hickling told The Mirror US that Trump made the remark from the back seat of his car right after Xi Jinping’s visit ended.
According to Hickling, the five words in question were, “We had a few arguments,” a remark she says paints a very different picture from the polished, ceremonial version of the visit shown on camera.
She claims Trump didn’t stop there either, going on to say Xi “is definitely going to change things. I know that,” before adding that the Chinese leader “knows there’s no deal if he doesn’t carry out what was said, but I have faith in him.”
A gift that didn’t get returned
The comment comes right after another notable moment from the trip. Trump gave Xi a statue of a bald eagle perched on a branch, saying he’d designed it with Melania and an American artist. Xi reportedly didn’t give anything back.
Xi and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, were greeted by Trump and Melania at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland with a red carpet, an armed military squadron, the national anthem, a B-1 Lancer flying overhead.
The next day, while the first ladies toured museums together, Trump and Xi held closed-door talks at the White House, then met again that evening for a state dinner.
Several top tech CEOs showed up, and protesters gathered outside too, their chants occasionally cutting through the music.
It was during that dinner that Trump leaned in and whispered something to Xi, something that seemed to amuse him, he laughed briefly before they both pulled it together for photos.
A trade deal extension, confirmed
Beyond the photo-ops, the visit did have real substance.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on Fox News that both countries agreed to extend their trade arrangement, lowering tariffs and holding off on new trade barriers.
“I don’t know whether a bigger deal can be done,” he said.
