All of us are born uniquely special and irrefutably beautiful in our own way.
One of the most breathtakingly fabulous things about being human is that no two of us are exactly the same, and as the years roll on we’re becoming far better as a species when it comes to accepting and celebrating our differences.
Mother Nicole Lucas Hallson is raising two beautiful kids, her son Asher and daughter Winry. But she’s also on a bigger mission, to prove the idea that we’re perfect due to our imperfections, and aims to reaffirm that her baby daughter, who was born with a rare birthmark, is beautiful just the way she is.
As per Good Morning America, little Winry Hall was born with an extremely rare birthmark known as congenital melanocytic nevi, or CMN.
As a result, Winry, at 13 months old, doesn’t look like the children around her – the rare birthmark that covers a fourth of her face.
Nicole, who works as a teacher, was really concerned and shocked when the nurses handed Winry over to her after the delivery in February 2021.
She experienced a fairly typical pregnancy and didn’t anticipate that her daughter would have a skin condition.
“I was fortunate to have a rather normal pregnancy! I dealt with morning sickness from around weeks 8 to 14, but once that subsided, I felt fantastic until the fatigue set in during the final month,” she shares on her blog.
Nicole mentions that it was likely the doctors and nurses who first noticed the CMN. However, all they expressed were cheers and congratulations for such a quick and smooth delivery.
They also reassured Nicole that all of Winry’s vital signs appeared to be healthy.
After Nicole had spent some time nursing her newborn daughter, she began to focus on Winry. Initially, the bewildered mother assumed that the large mark on Winry’s head was merely a bruise.
“It soon became clear to my husband and me that it was not a bruise. And honestly, I thought it resembled a mole quite a bit,” Nicole shares.
In her blog, Nicole has opened up about her emotions.
“Some of the excitement from labor had faded, and I would say that worry became the predominant feeling I experienced – I recognized that it looked like a mole, but I had never encountered anything like it before, and I was concerned it could be harmful to her. At that moment, none of the nurses had mentioned anything about it, but I wasn’t sure what questions to ask, so I just held her close and showered her with love.”
A report from the National Organization for Rare Diseases indicates that CMN can appear as light brown or black patches, and it can vary in size across any area of the body.
Nicole and her partner are eager to celebrate their daughter’s individuality, aiming to inspire others to embrace their differences with pride rather than shame.
“For many people, this is their first encounter with a birthmark like hers, and that’s part of what motivates me to share,” Hall mentioned.
“This serves as a great discussion point for parents to have with their children about the fact that kids can have differences, or for those parents who have a child resembling Winry or possessing any type of birthmark to see their child reflected in this way.”
Considering that Winry’s birthmark may increase her risk of melanoma (skin cancer), her parents are diligent about protecting her skin. However, Nicole expressed her greater concern about the possibility of her daughter facing bullying as she grows up.
“Her health and happiness are our utmost priority. We need to keep an eye on her with sunscreen. I’m cautious about hats and similar items,” Hall shared with Good Morning America.
“I believe our regular dermatology visits will likely become our best ally as she grows up.”
In terms of how Winry perceives the world, she is a joyful, lively little girl who seems to have no worries. In essence, she embodies everything a baby should be.
“She just exudes happiness. She’s nearly always giggling or squealing,” Hall mentioned. “She is truly the most joyful baby I have ever encountered.
“She’s quite the chatterbox already. We haven’t managed to get many words out yet, but she speaks her mind and is already showing a hint of sass, so I believe we’re in for quite an adventure.”
At Newsner, we believe that differences should be embraced, not ridiculed or belittled. We feel that Winry is an exceptionally unique little girl, and a lovely spirit as well!
