Barbra Streisand responded to Alysa Liu’s gold medal victory at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. Unfortunately, the singer’s tribute was not well received by certain fans.
20-year-old Liu from Richmond, California, captured global attention with her outstanding performances at this year’s Winter Olympics. She secured gold medals in both the women’s singles and the team event, making her the first American female figure skater to win gold at the Olympics in 24 years. Like many Americans, Streisand was also celebrating this significant achievement. She shared a post on social media to honor Liu’s accomplishment.
In her post, Streisand expressed, “We were so thrilled to see Alysa Liu win the gold medal in Milan yesterday. My husband just reminded me that in 2019, she performed to my song Don’t Rain on My Parade. I’m incredibly proud of her.” She added, “I heard that she is half Chinese. My second family in Brooklyn, who lived above us, was a Chinese family named the Choys. I worked in their Chinese restaurant from the age of 12 and also babysat their children. She was like a second mother to me,” the caption concluded.
Don’t Rain on My Parade has been one of Streisand’s signature songs from the 1964 musical Funny Girl. The film of the same name, released later, also showcased the song, with Streisand starring in the unforgettable role of Fanny Brice.
Alysa’s father, Arthur Liu, reportedly relocated to California at the age of 25. He went into exile from China following the crackdown during the Tiananmen Square Protests. Prior to leaving China, he was a graduate student in Guangzhou.
