Chaz Bono Weds Shara Blue Mathes in Elegant Hollywood Ceremony with Cher in Attendance…

Chaz Bono has officially tied the knot.

The 57-year-old son of Cher and the late Sonny Bono married Shara Blue Mathes on Sunday, March 8, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. According to the couple’s wedding website, guests followed a “Hollywood Glam Formal” dress code for the celebration.

Bono and Mathes share a long history that began decades ago when they first met as teenagers at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. Over the years, their lives took different paths before they eventually reunited and began a romantic relationship in January 2017.

“I met Shara over 40 years ago when we were both teenagers,” Bono told PEOPLE. “Not many people end up marrying the first person they ever kissed so many years later.”

He added that Mathes makes him feel whole, describing her as his partner, closest friend, and the love of his life. Bono said that whatever the future holds, they will face it together, stronger and more secure by each other’s side.

For the ceremony, Bono wore a traditional tuxedo paired with a black bow tie and a purple calla lily boutonnière. Mathes chose a long-sleeved lace wedding gown, styling her dark hair in loose curls and carrying a bouquet of vivid purple orchids and other richly colored flowers.

Cher, 79, watched from the front row as the newlyweds ended the ceremony with a romantic dip at the end of a black aisle decorated with glowing red candles and dramatic floral arrangements. The singer and actress is also the mother of Elijah Allman, 49, whose father is her late former husband Gregg Allman.

The wedding was organized by planner Natalie Sofer.

Following the celebration, the couple plans to take a honeymoon in Hawaii, according to their Honeyfund page. Mathes is also the mother of a 25-year-old son, Cooper, from a previous relationship.

Bono and Mathes maintain a close relationship with Cher. In December, they attended an event at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills where the iconic performer discussed her book, Cher: The Memoir, Part 1. A few months earlier, in October 2024, the three appeared together on the red carpet at Beyond Fest for the premiere of Little Bites, a horror film executive produced by Cher and Chaz.

Cher has long supported her son. After watching his 2011 documentary Becoming Chaz, which chronicled his gender transition, she reportedly told a friend that she admired his bravery in sharing his personal story. She added that what matters most to her is his happiness and that he has her unwavering love and support.
