Deployment of Marines to Support ICE Operations
About 200 U.S. Marines have been deployed to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Florida. These troops are assigned to assist with administrative, logistical, and support tasks inside detention facilities, not direct law enforcement or interaction with detainees, as clarified by Pentagon and military officials.
Officials describe this mission as part of a broader mobilization that could also include deployments to Louisiana and Texas to help ICE manage backlogs and operational demands.
What the Marines Will Do
The Pentagon has emphasized that the Marines involved are not authorized to perform law enforcement duties or take part in enforcement actions such as arrests or migrant processing. Their role is focused on internal support tasks that help ICE personnel with paperwork, transporting materials, and other administrative functions.
This distinction is rooted in longstanding legal limits — under laws like the Posse Comitatus Act, military personnel cannot be directly used for civilian law enforcement unless specific exemptions apply.
